We woke up at 6:30 am to enjoy breakfast at Shizen No Le before catching the bus to Shingu station.
Salmon, potato salad, pickled veggies, beans and miso soup.
Squished (good thing we like each other 😉 ) on our expensive bus ride! 40 minutes for $12.50 each!!
We visited the Tourist Information Center at the station where the wonderful woman detailed just how we would get to Nachi Falls and then back to Shin-Osaka by bus and train.
We could have hiked to Nachi Falls (like the bad ass older people did) to finish off the Kumano Kodo, but we decided to take public transportation for our bodies’ and time sake. If we would have hiked all 7 hours, there’s no doubt we not only would have been slower, but also made it back to Osaka by 9 or 10 pm regardless and we didn’t have sleeping arrangements. not worth it. This is vacation after all! We paid our backpacking dues.
Plus there is a good chance we would have skipped the falls if we hiked just because we would have been too tired! It was 3 hours of hiking up stairs even taking the bus!
Soooo many stairs.
But the view is worth it.
There were two temples on top of the hill.
And then the falls and pagoda.
We ate the lunch packed for us by the inn.
And then caught the bus down to a major train station so we could catch the JR line to Shin-Osaka. We ended up getting there an hour early, so we got ice cream 🙂
And walked 5 minutes to the coast to enjoy it.
WE MADE IT! Kumano Kodo hike = done!!!!
Then we caught our 4 hour train back to Shin-Osaka, made reservations for tomorrow’s train, and headed to our hotel, the New Osaka Hotel.
They didn’t speak much English, so not surprisingly, they didn’t have any record of the reservation Abe made on the phone. No worries, they still had a room available and for cheaper!!! It all works out in the end.
Our funny little room!
Since we spent a little more on a hotel instead of a hostel, we decided to eat in the room instead of at a restaurant. We headed back to the station (only a 3 minute walk!) To hit up the closing food stores.
40% off bread for dessert and breakfast tomorrow.
And 20-50% off prepared food at a grocery store.
Our final haul!
We’ve been eating so much rice, I was excited to take a break and eat a salad!! Sadly, it was nothing like a western salad 😦 It was slimy from the raw okra and other veggies and the dressing was not tasty. Sigh. At least I tried! Everything else was tasty and should hold us over until lunch time tomorrow!
Now off to sleep in western beds(!!) So that we can catch our super early train headed south tomorrow morning!
